WIPO seminar “PCT and the Madrid Trademark Registration System”

On the initiative of WIPO, the National Intellectual Property Office and the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine, on November 14, 2019, the WIPO seminar “PCT and the Madrid Trademark Registration System” was organized at the Synergy Science Park, which was attended by employees of our company.

During the first part of the event, Mr. Benoît Apercé provided useful information on the peculiarities of the use of the Madrid trademark registration system. Not only were the new countries recalled that joined the Madrid system in 2019 (Canada, Brazil, Malaysia), but also potential participants, in particular, South Africa, Pakistan, Malta.

The speaker introduced statistics on the leaders of application filings. So, the five leaders of 2018 include NOVARTIS AG (174 applications), L’OREAL (169 applications), DAIMLER AG (129 applications), APPLE INC. (87 applications) and HENKEL AG & CO. KGAA” (86 applications).

Among the most popular classes of goods and services class 9 (computers and computer peripheral devices), class 35 (advertising, business management), class 42 (scientific and technological services, software development), and class 25 (clothes, footwear) were named.

Among the countries-applicants, in 2018 the top five leading places were taken by the USA, Germany, China, and Switzerland. Although Ukraine was not included in the top twenty countries-applicants, in 2018 it took 17th place among the designated countries.

The second part of the seminar was devoted to the PCT system. The stages of the international application were reviewed in detail, and recommendations were given as to how to avoid the most common mistakes of the applicants.
